Have you ever heard someone call the top of your car by a different name? People in the business call it the “headliner.” Since it covers the top of the car from the inside (head). Most people who sit around all day never think about this part. Hidden from view. Thinking too much. Since you don’t have to touch it like the seats, you can go years without cleaning it.
At least twice a year is how often you should clean the headliner. Why? In the same way that a car with a worn and dirty headliner makes it look older than it is. Just imagine walking into a used car for the first time and being surprised to see that the headliner fabric is a strange shade of yellow that doesn’t go well with the rest of the interior’s sleek gray finish. What makes the headline so integral?
The headliner is usually attached to the ceiling instead of the roof. Usually, there is a small space between the metal roof and the headliner. The hollow serves many purposes. First, it makes an air cushion that keeps the car’s interior at a comfortable temperature all year.
Second, you could fill the space with soundproofing foam to stop vibrations. And the news stories finally look good. If people sat on the underside of the roof, rust and metal wear could be seen.
How, exactly, do they make those Headliners?
A headliner will usually have three different levels. The layer that is closest to the metal roof is made of foam. The soundproofing and vibration-absorbing material keep the car from freezing over and muffles other outside sounds, like the sound of rain on the roof. The next step is to add a layer of hard cardboard or polymer that follows the shape of the roof and keeps the headliner from sagging. The top layer, which makes up the finish of the headliner, is usually made of vinyl, plastic, or cloth.

- Cleaning on the Spot: For Marks and Dirt
You can use a cloth to get rid of most of the dirt, but you should be careful not to rub any dirt into the fabric of the headliner. This will make it hard to get rid of the dirt in the future. A light microfiber cloth is best for this job, but a towel or tea towel will do in a pinch.
Use a small amount of cleaner foam from the can. If you aren’t sure if the brand will stain the fabric, try a small amount on an area that won’t be seen. If the cleaner works, you can spray it on the cloth or the stain and wipe it away.
If the dirt is very stubborn, work the cleaner into a light foam so it can get into the top layer of the headliner. Then, use a clean cloth corner to wipe away the foam.

Cleaning Larger Dirt Deposits
Again, the first step is to remove as much dirt as possible from the surface by wiping and brushing it away with a damp cloth. Be careful not to use too much force because that could make the marks in the dirt more permanent. A brush with softer bristles could be a better alternative that works just as well.
Carefully spray the cleaner over the whole headliner to clean it. You can always use the cleaner again if you don’t think the first time was good enough, but you can’t take the cleaner back once it has soaked into the cloth. Let the cleaner do its job for a while to get the dirt’s attention, and then use the brush to clean the area lightly.
Let it dry in the air after you’ve cleaned it well. There’s no harm in giving it another scrub if there’s still dirt on it.
