Tips to Become More Giving This Year

2023 is the year of empathy and kindness, and becoming more giving is the perfect way to bring a bit more good into the world. But how exactly do you get started?
Make it Personal
When considering donating or volunteering, make sure that you’re choosing an organisation that aligns with your values and interests. This will make it more likely that you’ll stay committed to your cause and will help you form a connection with the people or organisation you’re helping. For example, you may have lost a relative to cancer and want to support cancer research. Alternatively, it could be Penny Appeal or another worthwhile cause.
Donate Your Time
Besides money, you can also donate your time. Consider volunteering for an organisation or cause you care about. This can help the organisation by freeing up its resources to focus on other needs and will also help you feel more connected to the cause. You could also volunteer at a soup kitchen or food bank, tutor children in underserved areas, or help out at a local charity shop.
Set Realistic Goals
If possible, set yourself a schedule of when you plan on giving back throughout the year. It could be once a month, once every two weeks, or whatever fits your lifestyle. Also, make sure to set realistic goals that are achievable and doable. That way, you won’t get overwhelmed and discouraged if you don’t reach them. Often, people have too grand an idea and they never get started.
Take on a Sporting Challenge
Choose a sporting challenge or something you’ve always wanted to try and use it as an opportunity to raise money for charity. Whether it’s biking, running, or something else, you’ll be able to exercise and help others at the same time. For example, it could be a 100km cycle, a marathon, or even just a local fun run.
Plan Your Time
If you find that time is the issue, then plan it out. Dedicate a certain amount of days or hours to volunteering each week and stick to it like you would anything else. If you find an activity that you really enjoy doing, then the time will fly by. If you need to, buy a diary and make a note of when you can go and volunteer.
Help Out Neighbours
There are so many ways to give back to the community and helping out your neighbours is one of them. Whether it’s bringing over groceries, mowing someone’s lawn, or just being there for an elderly neighbour, small acts of kindness can add up. Check on your neighbours to see if there’s anything you can do for them, and it doesn’t have to be a one-time thing either.
Love Your Family
Being a giving person isn’t just about charities, it’s about being kind-hearted to the people closest to you. Spend quality time with your family and show them that you care. You might have a large or small family, but each person deserves your love and respect. For example, take them out for picnics, amusement parks, or special events.

Use Social Media
Using local pages and groups on social media is a great way to reach out and give to those in need. You can connect with people who need your help either by sharing their posts or by directly contacting them. Even if you can only give a small amount of money or time, it will still be appreciated.
